Application Engineer/Inside Sales – Control Systems

The Application Engineer is responsible for fulfilling customer needs concerning product application, specification, selection, quotation, documentation, and delivery of asset management related hardware, software, and services. This position supports the specifying and quoting of Systems related products and services to various industries.  This includes Emerson Automation Solutions’ DeltaV® Distributed Control System, Syncade® Suite (MES), Remote Automation Solutions (RAS), Emerson and PCE Pacific Systems Integration, DeltaV® and RAS Panels and a variety of related products and solutions.  As part of the sales team, the Application Engineer is integral to supporting the efforts of the Outside Sales Team, and the resulting success and growth of the business.  This position works out of the Bothell Sales Office, communicating with customers almost exclusively by phone & email.

Key Job Elements:

  • Respond to incoming customer calls and emails that request product and services information.
  • Interpret customer specifications and requirements (RFQ’s) in order to understand functional and commercial details.  Develop a list of hardware, software, and buyout components, along with appropriate services, needed to meet customer requirements.
  • Achieve gross margin and bookings goals, cross-sell additional PCE products and services when possible, and actively support various growth and customer service initiatives.
  • Determine product or services sourcing that will most effectively maximum PCE Pacific’s gross margin while meeting the customer’s needs.
  • Employ strong technical writing skills to develop professional proposals that articulate the technical, commercial, and differentiated aspects of our offering.
  • Prepare internal order write-up documentation in response to customer purchase orders.
  • Troubleshoot delivery issues that arise and notify the customer of any change in status of their order.
  • Instruct the customer on procedures for returning items when necessary.
  • Assist customers with requests for product repairs.
  • On occasion, conduct or assist with presentations or other meetings in Bothell office, and/or customer site locations.
  • Develops, maintains and leverages good working relationships within PCE Pacific and our principle suppliers.
  • Ability to cross train on addition PCE product lines including Reliability/Vibration Systems, RTU (Remote Terminal Units), and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and other control products.
Job Requirements:
  • DeltaV® experience strongly preferred.  Experience in a DeltaV® sales or technical capacity is acceptable.
  • Well refined customer service skills (good phone presence, timely responses and follow-through on requests, “plus one” service, etc.) in order to represent PCE Pacific positively and develop ongoing relationships with new and existing customers.
  • Process industry product and applications knowledge, typically acquired through a 4-year engineering or technical degree, job experience, and/or product-specific training.
  • Strong understanding of control system architecture, software & networks, including DCS (Distributed Control Systems). Includes knowledge of controllers, I/O, workstations, network devices and accessories such as enclosures/cabinets, power supplies, and cabling.
  • General familiarity with industrial process control equipment.
  • Previous inside or outside sales experience and the ability to accurately identify customers’ needs, effectively match them with PCE Pacific products and services, and sell the value these products bring to the customer.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills that reflect a professional business approach.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio).
  • Good organizational and time management skills, as well as the ability to be self-directed and work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to multi-task and carry out concurrent customer requests and proposal activities.
  • Customer-focused outlook with a professional and positive attitude.
  • Capable of working both independently and as part of a team.   Good leadership and administrative skills in order to efficiently function as a product champion or trainer
  • Proven analytical and problem-solve skills, and the ability to deal with detail-oriented work accurately.
  • Ability to travel out of state to attend week-long product/application classes, along with occasional visits to customer sites.
